    What is LDH?

LDH [Lactic Acid Dehydrogenase] is an enzyme found in almost every cell of your body, including your blood, muscles, brain, kidneys, and pancreas. The enzyme turns sugar into energy.

    What is LDH test?

The LDH test measures the amount of LDH in your blood or other body fluid. Increased LDH activities are found in a variety of pathological conditions such as myocardial infarction, liver diseases, blood diseases, and cancer or muscle diseases.

What are the normal values of Serum LDH?

The normal values of serum LDH are >245 units/L (normal range: 110 to 210 units/L).

    How this test is conducted?

You’ll have blood drawn through a needle inserted into a vein in your arm. For LDH tests of the cerebrospinal fluid, you’ll need a lumbar puncture (also called a spinal tap). You’ll have a thin needle inserted into your lower back.

What is the significance of high and low levels of LDH?

High levels of LDH indicate some form of tissue damage. High levels of more than one isoenzyme may indicate more than one cause of tissue damage. Extremely high levels of LDH could indicate severe disease or multiple organ failure. Two types of genetic mutations cause low LDH levels. People with the first type will experience fatigue and muscle pain, especially during exercise. While those with the second type may have no symptoms at all. You may also have low LDH levels if you’ve consumed a large amount of ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

What is the relation between covid-19 and LDH?

Increased serum LDH values are one of the abnormal diagnostic parameters in COVID-19 patients with a severe or fatal course of disease. Potential clinical and biological significance of elevated LDH are pulmonary injury, as well as widespread organ damage. Therefore, Serum LDH is as a marker for evaluating clinical severity and monitoring treatment response in COVID-19 pneumonia.
