    Jaundice in newborns is a common condition. It is the yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes. The neonatal jaundice is of two types Physiological neonatal jaundice and Pathological neonatal jaundice. The pathological type of neonatal jaundice leads for hospitalization of babies in the first two weeks of life.

    1) Neonatal Jaundice

    The neonatal jaundice is a common disease condition seen in infants particularly in babies born before 38 weeks’ gestation known as PRETERM BABIES and some breastfed babies. In this condition the yellow discoloration is seen on the sclera, face, nasolabial folds, tips of the nose in early-stage later on in trunk, abdomen, extremities palm and soles. Infant jaundice usually occurs because a baby’s liver is not mature enough to get rid of bilirubin in the bloodstream.

    • Physiological causes.
    • Immaturity and low immunity.

    • Infections – both intrauterine and postnatal.

    3) Physiological jaundice of newborn:

    Physiological jaundice is the most common type of jaundice seen in infants. It usually appears between 3 to 72 hours of age maximum intensity is seen on 4th to 5th day and disappears by 7th day.

    It is caused due to breaking down of fetal red blood cells and the production of bilirubin due to the lack of bacteria in the gut in the early part of neonatal life.


    4) Breast milk jaundice:

    • This type of jaundice occurs in breastfed newborns and often appears at the end of the first week of life.
    • It is usually a harmless condition that resolves spontaneously.
    • Mothers typically do not have to discontinue breastfeeding.


    5) Breastfeeding jaundice:

    • This type of jaundice occurs when the breastfed newborn does NOT receive adequate breast milk intake.
    • It occurs because of delayed or insufficient milk production by the mother.


    6) Neonatal Jaundice and Sign & symptoms:

    • Yellow discoloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes is a sign of infant jaundice.
    • This condition usually appears between the second and fourth day after birth.
    • Poor breast feeding.
    • Lethargic.
    • Excessive sleepiness.
    • Irritable baby.
