    recurrent tummy ache

Children’s abdominal complaints can have many underlying causes, most of which are not threatening, but some (such as appendicitis) can be very serious. For this reason, all abdominal problems should be monitored closely and treated with care.

Most common symptoms to look for:

    • Nausea
    • Stomach ache
    • Diarrhoea
    • Vomiting
    • Dehydration (from the diarrhoea and vomiting)

Every condition can have different cause, but share many of the same symptoms. So, parents need to keep track of new and existing symptoms of the child by observing him very closely.

Some serious symptoms to look for:

Symptoms such as weight loss, long lasting fever, significant vomiting, severe diarrhoea, blood in the stool or vomit, or pain in the upper right or lower right abdomen are indicative of serious health issue or disease, which need medical attention as soon as possible.

Methods to manage your child’s symptoms:

    • Maintain Hydration with sports drinks, fruit juice.
    • If a child is not nauseous, give them plain, bland, low-fibre foods like bananas, plain white rice, toast.
    • Serve smaller portions to your kids.
    • Let your child drink water before meals-up to 15 minutes prior or about 30-40 minutes after meals.
    • Processed foods contain many harmful substances such as trans fats and preservatives that can interfere with your child’s digestion. So, stick them to natural, whole foods, that easily digest.
    • Plan one or two vegetarian days in a week for your child, where meals are organized around fruits, vegetables and non-meat proteins such as legumes.
    • Proper combinations of the meal should be designed to facilitate digestion. The main foods which need to be kept apart are starches and protein rich diet.

If digestive issues still continue after implementation of the above strategies, consult your health care practitioner for further advice.
