    What is Rubella?

    Rubella is also commonly called ‘German measles’. It means red rash and it is often confused with measles although both are different.

    Who is more prone to this infection?

    • Male-female have an equal probability of getting infected
    • Children of 5-9 years’ age group are more susceptible
    • Pregnant and lactating women are affected
     

    What is the mode of spread of the virus?

    • Trans-placental: Pregnant women to the foetus.
    • From lactating mother to baby.
    • It can spread through talking, coughing and sneezing by an infected person 
    • Direct contact with an infected person.

    What are the signs and symptoms of Rubella?

    • Fever
    • The rash-red macular rash starts first on the face followed by trunk and limbs
    • Itching
    • Lymphadenopathy- lymph nodes of the neck get enlarged
    • Nausea
    • Anorexia  
    • Congenital rubella syndrome: 
    –It is a condition in which the rubella virus affects the developing baby in the first three months of pregnancy due to infection in mother.
    –It has a lot of complications, risk and lifelong health problem in the baby further.

    What investigations are advised for Rubella?

    • Urine, blood, sputum and cerebrospinal fluid culture
    • ELISA test
    • IgM and IgG antibody detection
    • Pregnant women in the first trimester have to be investigated

    What is the prognosis of Rubella?

    • Rubella has a good prognosis 
    • The patient may turn asymptomatic in a few days.
    • Some of them develop congenital rubella syndrome and its complications.

    What treatment is advised for Rubella?

    Most of the patient recovered by itself, medication help to reduce discomfort, 
    • Anti-inflammatory

    How to prevent the spread of infections?

    -Vaccination: It is a major tool used for prevention of rubella.
