    Urinary tract infection in dogs

    Urine infection is also known as bacterial cystitis. Unlike humans, dogs too get infected with bacterial infections and cause UTIs and experience similar symptoms.

    Urinary tract infections are common in dogs, whereas older dogs ages 7 and above are more prone to such infections. Female dogs are prone to these infections as male dogs have a longer urethra, therefore, bacteria take a longer time to travel upwards.

    What Causes UTIs in Dogs?

    The most common cause of UTIs in dogs are bacteria, which enters through the urethral opening. The bacteria can develop when feces or debris enter the area, or \if the immune system of the dog is weakened because of lack of nutrients.

    In most cases, E. coli is the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. If pets or dogs are suffering from certain chronic diseases like cancer, kidney disease, kidney stones, diabetes, bladder inflammation or infection, spinal cord abnormalities, and prostate disease, etc. are more prone to urinary tract infections.

    Symptoms of UTIs in Dogs:

    -Bloody urine or hematuria
    -Straining during urination
    -Wanting to be let outside more frequently
    -Dribbling of the urine
    -Licking around the urinary opening
    -Fever
    -Malaise
    -lethargy

    Homeopathic medicines for UTI are:

    • Cantharis

    -Cantharis has the main sphere of action on the genitourinary system. Indicated in case of urinary tract infection.
    -intolerable urging and tenesmus.
    -Frequent urge to pass urine.
    -intense burning and cutting pain while urinating
    -Urine scalds and is passed in drops.

    • Staphysagria

    -ineffectual desire to urinate,
    -Prostate enlargement also causes infection in the urinary tract

    • Apis mellifica

    -burning at the end of urination.

    • Berberis vulgaris

    -There is no desire to urinate.
    -irregularities of urine, with copious discharges.
    -There is Changeability of urine like benzoic acid.
