    What is Lyme disease?

    Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, carried by deer ticks. Lyme spreads when the infected ticks bite the skin, through which the Borrelia spirochete transmit into the body. Lyme disease doesn’t transmit from an affected person to others. Lyme disease affects the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system

    What are the Sign and Symptoms of Lyme disease?

    Lyme disease is described in three phases:-

    -Early localized disease –with skin inflammation.

    -Early disseminated disease –heart and nervous system involvement.

    -Late disease –motor and sensory nerve damage.

    The bacteria enter the skin though bite and reach into the bloodstream. Within a few days of bite, the skin around the bite develops a classical rash (erythema migrans) associated with the following symptoms:

    • Stiff neck

    • Muscle aches, joints pain

    • Chills

    • Fever

    • Swollen lymph nodes

    • Headaches

    • Fatigue

    • Less commonly eye inflammation.

    • Few patients may develop heart problems –irregular, slow heartbeat, dizziness and shortness of breath

    • Paralysis of facial muscles

    • Weakness, numbness, and pain in limbs

    • Loss of memory, concentration difficulty, mood change

    • Difficulty in sleep

    • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)

    How the classical rash of Lyme disease looks like?

    Expanding red rash which has a bulls-eye appearance. There is an outer ring of bright redness with a central area of redness.
