    What is tonsillitis?

    • Tonsillitis defined as the redness, swelling, and pain in the tonsillar tissue due to infection by bacteria or virus.

    • Tonsils are one of the tissues of the lymphatic system (part of the immune system of the body) which act as an indicator of infection.

    • This condition is easily diagnosed.

    Which age group is more affected due to this?

    • Tonsillitis can occur in any age group but mainly it affects the school going children to adults.

    • This condition rarely can affect infants and old age individuals especially above 50 years of age.

    What are the types of tonsillitis?

    There are four types of tonsillitis:

    Parenchymatous tonsillitis

    • In this type, the infection is confined to tonsillar mass.

    • The appearance of this type of infected tonsil is uniformly enlarged and red.


    Follicular tonsillitis

    • In this type, the infection occurs in crypts of the tonsil, due to infection the crypts get filled with pus-like material.

    • On examination, we will see the yellow spots.

    Catarrhal tonsillitis or superficial tonsillitis

    • In this type, the inflammation of tonsils occurs.

    • The whole pharynx is infected as in cases of viral pharyngitis.

    Acute membranous tonsillitis

    • In this type of tonsillitis is the mature stage of follicular tonsillitis.

    • In this type when the discharges from different crypts to form a membrane on the surface of tonsil.

    What causes tonsillitis?

    • The tonsils are the first line of Défense against illness.

    • They produce white blood cells to help body fight infection.

    • The tonsils are caused by bacteria and viruses that enter our body through the mouth.

    • Tonsillitis infection is caused by Haemolytic Streptococcus bacteria.

    • Some of the other bacteria’s which can cause tonsil infection are H. influenza or staphylococci pneumococci.

    What is the sign and symptoms of tonsillitis?

    • Sore throat.

    • It is difficult to swallow the food due to pain in the throat.

    • Fever can be an associated symptom.

    • Headache.

    • If infection travels up to the eustachian tube (ear) and can cause complication acute otitis media due to which pain in the ear is present.

    • Constipation along with abdominal pain due to the association of mesenteric lymphadenitis.

    • Weakness and debility.

    • Coating of the tongue and offensive breath.

    • On examination, the throat tonsils are seen red and swollen.

    • Lymph nodes on the external neck especially jugulodigastric nodes are enlarged and painful.

    How to investigate tonsillitis?

    • The tonsillitis is detected by a doctor on examination of the throat.

    • Complete blood cell count.

    • Strep test

    • White Blood Count

    • Platelet count

    • ESR 

    What are the complications of tonsillitis?

    • Cervical abscess

    • Pararpharyngeal abscess

    • Chronic tonsillitis

    • Acute otitis media

    • Rheumatic fever

    • Peritonsillar abscess

    • Acute glomerulonephritis

    • Subacute bacterial endocarditis

    How to treat the case of tonsillitis?

    • Antibiotics during the acute stage of infection.

    • Anti- pyretics when fever is present (paracetamol).

    • Penicillin and amoxicillin.

    • Chronic cases treated with tonsillectomy.

    • Warm salt water gargles also help.
