    syncope

    What is syncope?

Syncope is also known as fainting, self-limited loss of consciousness usually due to insufficient blood flow to the brain. It most often occurs due to low blood pressure (hypotension) and the heart doesn’t pump enough oxygen to the brain.

What are the types of syncope?

Reflex syncope: may be due to vasovagal syncope, which is mediated by emotional distress such as fear or physical pain.

Situational syncope: occurs with a fixed event such as micturition, deglutition, exercise induced, and carotid sinus syncope.

Vasovagal syncope: is the most common type seen in young adults and can occur at any age.
It occurs in a standing position and is precipitated by fear, emotional stress, or pain (e.g., after an injection)

What are the CAUSES of syncope?

    1)Non-Cardiac Causes

There are three general categories – neurological causes, metabolic causes, and vasomotor causes.

    • Neurological Causes

    -Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)

    -Subclavian steal syndrome

    -Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)

    • Metabolic causes

    It includes:

-Hypoxia: (reduced oxygen in the blood)

-Hyperventilation: which occurs in severe anxiety reactions or panic attacks and severe hypoglycemia.

    • Vasomotor Causes

Vasomotor syncope occurs when the body’s complex mechanisms that maintain a normal blood pressure fail (either transiently or chronically), leading to a drop-in blood pressure.

    2) Cardiac Causes

    • Cardiac Arrhythmias:  common cause of syncope.

    • Obstructive Cardiac Disease

An obstruction to the blood flowing through the heart can cause a drop in the amount of blood the heart is pumping; several heart disorders can partially block the flow of blood through the heart. These include:

-Heart valve disease: aortic stenosis and mitral stenosis.

    -Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

-Massive pulmonary embolus: An obstruction in a blood vessel near the heart.

-Cardiac tumors: (a benign tumor that can obstruct the mitral valve)

What are the signs and symptom?

Faintness, dizziness, or light-headedness occurs in majority of patients experiencing true syncope.
Other symptoms are vertigo, weakness, diaphoresis, epigastric discomfort, nausea, blurred vision, pallor
    • Headaches
    • Low back pain, palpitations, chest pain
    • Loss of consciousness

Can you die from a syncope?

No, person with sudden cardiac arrest loses consciousness suddenly but will die without immediate medical attention. A person with syncope recovers quickly without treatment.

    What heart conditions cause syncope?

Bradycardia, Tachycardia or hypotension may cause cardiovascular syncope. It may increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

    Can you faint from stress?

If the syncope is prolonged, it can cause a seizure. You may suffer from a simple fainting due to anxiety, fear, pain, emotional stress, hunger, or intake of alcohol or drugs. This condition is called postural hypotension.

    Does syncope cause brain damage?

Fainting, or syncope, is caused by a lack of oxygen in the brain. Causes, including hypotension, or low blood pressure.

Fainting should be treated as a medical emergency.

    Can you drive with syncope?

Blackouts, fainting (syncope), loss of consciousness and driving is dangerous. Person should avoid driving.

    How homeopathy helps?

    • Arsenic alb

    • Gelsemium

    • Lachesis

    • Ginseng

    How to prevent syncope?

    • In case of feeling dizziness, sit or lie down right away. Put your feet up higher than your head. This will get the blood flowing back to your heart and brain.
    • Moving slowly. This is very important when you change from a lying or sitting position to a standing position.
    • Take some deep breaths before you stand up from a lying position.
    • Straining to have a bowel movement may cause you to faint. Eat foods high in fiber to make it easier to have a bowel movement.
    • Avoid driving.
    • Avoid exercise outside during day time.
