It is a chronic condition of bone characterized by disorder of the normal bone remodeling process. In Paget’s disease the bone remodeling is disturbed and not synchronized. The bone which is formed is abnormal, enlarged not as dense, brittle and prone to breakage.
It affects older skeletal bone of adults. It is estimated that 1% of adults in the U.S have Paget’s diseases .There is also an extremely rare form of Paget’s disease in children referred to juvenile Paget’s disease . Paget’s disease is also known as osteitis deformans.
Virus infection trigger the Paget’s disease in people who have inherited the genetic tendency to develop the condition. Certain genes have been associated with Paget’s disease including the Sequestrosome 1 gene on chromosome 5.
The symptoms of Paget’s disease depend on the bones affected and the severity of the disease. The disease can cause pain in the bones or joints, headache, hearing loss, pressure on nerves, increased head size, bowing of limbs or curvature of spine.
The most common bones affected by Paget’s disease include the spine, thigh bone, pelvis, the skull, the collarbone and the upper arm bone. Enlarged bones can pinch adjacent nerves causing tingling and numbness. Hip or knee involvement leads to arthritis, limping as well as pain and stiffness of the hip. With widespread of Paget‘s disease it develop congestive heart failure.
Paget’s disease is diagnosed on the X-ray .It might be detected with other imaging test such as bone scan, MRI scan, CT scan and blood test. Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme that comes from bone which is elevated in the Paget’s disease. Serum alkaline phosphatase (SAP) is used in the treatment of Paget’s disease. Bone Scan is useful to determine the extent of the Paget’s disease.
Surgical operations may be necessary for damaged joints, fractures, severely deformed bones or when nerves are being pinched by enlarged bone.
Paget’s disease occur most frequently in the spine, skull, pelvis, thighs, and lower legs. Treatment can control the Paget’s disease but does not cure.
