Binswanger’s Disease

Binswanger’s disease is also called subcortical vascular dementia. It is a type of dementia which damages the deep layers of white matter in the brain.There is the thickening and narrowing of arteries that feed the sub cortical areas of the brain. Atherosclerosis which is known as hardening of the arteries is a systemic process that affects blood vessels throughout the body.As the arteries become more narrowed, the blood supplied by those arteries decreases and brain tissue dies.

It begins late in the fourth decade of life and increases in severity with age.
