Barrett syndrome is an disorder in which the lining of the esophagus( esophagus is an tube carrying food and saliva from mouth to stomach ) is replaced by tissue which is similar to the lining of the intestine. About 10% to 15% of people with chronic GERD develop Barrett esophagus .

Barrett esophagus is one of complication of chronic GERD. Esophagus cells changes can lead to cancer of esophagus ( Adenocarcinoma )

Causes of Barrett Syndrome

The exact cause is unknown
The stomach produces acid for food digestion but is also protected from it , in case of GERD the contents of stomach flow backwards into the esophagus known as reflux. Majority of people with acid reflux do not develop Barrett’s esophagus but may develop in case of frequent acid reflux .

Risk –
GERD ( gastroesophageal reflux disease )  in GERD the lining of the esophagus becomes damaged due to stomach acid refluxing back into the esophagus .
